on Stokes Croft I saw Sue
and on Stokes Croft Sue saw me
not for the first time
since way back when she knew me
and I knew her
but it's the first time since that time
there was a smile passed between us
and you, yes you, you should have seen us
or maybe not for it wasn't that hot
when way back then she knew me
and I knew her

and when I'd seen her
(that's today her, not back then her)
just after, as I crossed the road
it made me wonder whether it's because
I'm so oft a presence on Stokes Croft
that all those Sues from way back when
those sights, those ones who I once knew
