He showed me the hash.
‘A fiver,’ he said.
‘How much is there?’
‘I don’t know,’ he said. ‘Anyway they’re getting some more soon,’ he said. ‘They’re waiting for giro day.’
Pause.
‘For a minute there I was back in the nineteen eighties,’ I said. ‘“Waiting for giro day”’s not a phrase I’ve heard, I don’t think since, well, then.’
‘Nor me,’ he said. ‘It’s like that joke, “what’s green and gets you pissed?”’
‘Not everyone would know.’
